Risk management
Most of the time dental implants are safe, fast and easy…
Dental implants have a quickly become the gold standard for the replacement of lost or broken teeth. This year, dental implants will give over a million people the self confidence and well-being that come from having beautiful, functional teeth. Nowadays, dental implant surgery is a routine procedure. Although the vast majority of patients experience no complications, individual doctors vary in their success rates and complications are possible. Therefore, it’s important to choose a doctor who is well qualified and highly skilled in the art of implantology.
Risks of dental implants:
- Numbness
- Implant failure
- Infection and other problems
Numbness
In the rare event that a nerve is compromised when implants are placed, the result can be temporary—or even permanent—numbness of the lips, chin or one side of the tongue. Doctors vary in their procedure for ensuring correct implant placement.
For example, instead of just using standard X-rays to assist with treatment planning, Dr. Sirakian refers many patients to one of Harvard University’s most highly skilled radiologists for digital CT scanning. This 3-D technology allows the location of all of the vital structures in the mouth to be identified with pinpoint accuracy and the volume and quality of the bone to be measured. Used with SimPlant™ software, this method allows the ideal depth and position of the implants to be determined with a level of precision that was previously unattainable.
Dr. Sirakian is also trained in NobelGuide™, a comprehensive treatment planning system that allows for the fabrication of a custom-fitted guide, or stent, that contains premarked holes to guide implant placement during surgery. By ensuring that the implants are placed at exactly the location and angle determined during the planning process, NobelGuide greatly reduces the risk of nerve involvement and makes surgery faster, easier and more predictable.
When choosing a doctor, you’ll want to ask what methods he or she uses to determine implant placement.
Implant failure
As the body heals after the initial surgery, the bone must osseointegrate, or bond to the surface of the implant. Healing is a biological process, and occasionally implants fail, or do not become fully integrated.
It is important to ask your doctor about his or her methods and success rates. Doctors who are experienced in dental implant placement can minimize the risk of implant failure by carefully assessing the health of the bone and adjusting the angle of placement in order to maximize the depth that the implant reaches. For example, Dr. Sirakian’s comprehensive treatment planning system incorporates technology designed to maximize osseointegration by achieving greater depth of placement.
If it’s determined that the amount or quality of bone is inadequate, corrective procedures such as sinus lifts and bone grafting can be performed in order to help ensure implant success. You may wish to ask your doctor how he or she handles these procedures.
Other problems
Implant surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries a small risk of infection. (Correct sterile surgical technique greatly reduces this risk.) Implants can also fracture or break, and there can be problems with the connection between the implant and the restoration. Rarely there can be damage to the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus, or other teeth in the mouth, which may necessitate other procedures such as a root canal or even an extraction.
How to get results you can smile about…
As with any surgery, dental implant procedures require significant expertise. Thus, it's important to take the time to evaluate your doctor’s qualifications and to gain a through understanding of the techniques he or she uses to minimize the risk of complications.
With success rates approaching 95%, the overwhelming majority of people experience no problems with implantation. However, this statistic may have no bearing on an individual doctor’s performance. Over the past two decades Dr. Sirakian has successfully placed over 4,000 implants. You’ll want to ask your doctor about his or her own success rate.
